Our University is a national key university with disciplines of information and electronics as the majors and with coordinated development of multi-disciplines of engineering, science, management, and arts, which is under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. It is one of the key institutions of higher learning under construction according to the national “211” Project, one of the 56 universities which have set up graduate schools, one of the 35 universities which have established demonstrative software schools, and one of the 20 universities which have been given approval to found IC talents training bases. Now the University has constructed two campuses: the north campus and the south campus, which occupy an area of 4000 mu (about 267 hectares), with the school building area of over 1.3 million square meters. Its two libraries have 4.2 million books. Presently, the University has more than 30000 students, of whom there are over 1700 doctoral students and over 8600 master students. The University is ranked among the top 100 out of over 2,000 higher educational institutions in China. It is one of the oldest institutions in China, and its origin can be traced back to 1902 when it was first established as SJ Normal College. It was then founded out of the initial college by combining the former JS University of Science and Technology (a national key university), ZJ Medical College and ZJ Teachers’ College with approval from the Ministry of Education, China in August, 2001. Currently, the University is a teaching, research and community oriented comprehensive institution with emphasis on engineering disciplines. It is one of the first groups of universities that offered doctoral programs for students. At the moment, it has 26 schools offering bachelor, master and PhD degree programs in 9 academic fields namely: Engineering, Science, Medicine, Literature, Economics, Law, Management, Education and History. In addition, the university has 3 national key academic disciplines. It also has 4 provincial key primary disciplines and 13 provincial key disciplines. It has been entrusted by the United Nations to train many high ranking management personnel and experts in Agricultural Machinery. Since 2005, the university started to enroll a complete batch of degree learners. Presently, nearly 500 international students from more than 60 countries are studying in the university. Since 2010, it has been focusing on promoting internationalization through extensive learning and research work. The number of international students has also been estimated to reach about 1 200 by the year 2015.

University Information The current on-campus student population is 23,430 which includes1,300 graduate students, 16,200 undergraduates, 3,200 vocational school students, 1,900 continuing education students and 830 ethnic minority students. By the year 2006, after three years of unremitting efforts, the university’s construction area has reached 247,000 square meters. The new campus, which integrates the previous campus, takes on a brand new up-to-date look. It is manifested in the university’s first-class teaching and research facilities such as the new library, learning buildings characteristic of multimedia classrooms, laboratories, stadiums, e-reading rooms, language laboratories, computer rooms along with high-speed broadband campus-wide networks. Currently, there are 112 basic and specialized laboratories, 49 multimedia classrooms and language laboratories, 3200 pieces of medium and large-sized teaching and research equipment. The university covers an area of 127 hectares with a built-up area of 628,000 square meters. The campus library has a total collection of 2.546 million books (including 1.397 million e-books). Also, the university has enhanced housing conditions for its staff by building 150,000 square meters of apartments, in addition to the previous 20,000 square meter apartments for professors and PhDs. To date, there are altogether 20 schools on campus which include Petrochemical, Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Chemical and Materials, Environmental and Biological, Mechanical Engineering, Information and Control, Computers and Communications, Economic Management, Mathematics, Foreign Studies, Marxism, Physical, Vocational Energy, Continuing Education, Education Experimental, International Education, Ethnic Education, Postgraduate School and the Yk University Park.
